The Kool Skool interviews Old School L.A. Graffiti legend Slick from K2S and www.dizizit.com in London’s number 1 Graffit Hall Of Fame Stockwell.
Slick is an important foundation figure in the International Graffiti scene, many Europeans first saw his art in Steam 156’s Graffiti pages in Hip-Hop Connection. His well publicized Graffiti mural battle against Hex UTI WCA, is one of the true examples of Hip-Hop cultures essence of “bringing your skills to the battle”. He also painted a huge burner in Ice Cubes “Who’s The Mack” video, which was another marker for the scene. Slick talks about coming to the U.K. in the 80’s to compete in the Bridlington Graffiti jam with Risk WCA, and his involvement in the Graffiti/Skateboarding clothing industry. Like commercial buildings and apartments, new homes will have to be covered to a height of 9 feet with material that resists spray paint unless owners agree to remove tagging in seven days.
Opening a new front in the city’s efforts to reduce tagging, the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance requiring that all new homes include a finish that is resistant to spray paint unless the owners promise to remove any graffiti themselves.
The measure, which was unanimously approved, extends a provision in the Los Angeles Municipal Code requiring that new commercial buildings and apartments be coated to a height of 9 feet with an impermeable material, such as ceramic tile, baked enamel or a chemical gloss. Previously, single-family homes and duplexes were exempt. Officials have tried many approaches to curb the city’s vexing graffiti problem, including installing high-tech camera systems and making parents liable for civil damages for their children’s vandalism. “The bottom line is we spend a lot of money on graffiti removal,” said Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who seconded the ordinance when it was introduced by his former colleague, Wendy Greuel, before she was elected city controller. “Wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to spend this much money?” Last year, the Los Angeles Department of Public Works spent $7.1 million to remove 28.2 million square feet of graffiti from 641,000 locations, both public and private, said Paul Racs, who directs the office of community beautification. This is money the city can ill afford to spend in the current economy, Rosendahl said.
Although Councilwoman Jan Perry supported the ordinance, she expressed concern about the burden it places on property owners. Architects, designers and developers have complained that the existing rules add to their costs and limit their choice of construction materials. City officials acknowledge that not all construction materials are compatible with every finish. Some coatings also cause discoloration to a building’s surface and most will wear off with time. That is why, they said, the measure includes an opt-out provision for owners who sign an agreement to remove any graffiti within seven days of its appearance on their property, or within 72 hours of receiving notification from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. The Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council, however, argued that allowing graffiti to stay up for up to seven days will give taggers a “rotating, free canvas.” “Graffiti is best deterred by having a short life,” the council said in a statement approved in April. “If taggers’ vandalism is visible the next time they visit, and for a week or more afterward, it encourages them to do more and others to add to it. Seventy-two hours should be the maximum.” City officials recognize Tuesday’s ordinance won’t solve the graffiti problem. The next step, Councilman Tom LaBonge suggested, might be to extend the construction requirements to the government’s own buildings and vehicles. Even so, Racs said after the meeting, “We’re still going to be taking care of light poles, curbs and stop signs.”

Massive graffiti scrawl finally being removed from L.A. River
Officials today began removing a massive piece of graffiti from the Los Angeles River in downtown L.A.
This concrete channel east of downtown runs through two rail yards and has
become the ultimate proving ground for graffiti vandals vying for visibility and reputation.
The centerpiece is something officials say is one of the biggest tags in the United States: Three block letters that cover a three-story-high wall and run the length of several blocks between the 4th Street and 1st Street bridges. It spells out “MTA” — Metro Transit Assassins.
A group of alleged taggers were arrested in January in connection with the “MTA” graffiti. They are awaiting trial and are being asked to pay restitution if they are convicted.
These huge graffiti projects take paint rollers, not spray cans. Some of the most elaborate tags take days.
Cleaning graffiti from the river is far more expensive than cleaning other areas. Officials use high-pressure water spray to remove the toxic paint. But hazardous-material crews must then dam and capture all the runoff to prevent it from getting into the riverbed.

In the slang of the street, there are “toys” and there are “writers.”
Toys are the spray-can painters who are just starting out, fumbling around with a can of paint and oblivious to the difference between standing 2 inches from a wall and working from a foot away. Then there are the writers, those artists who have learned the tricks of the trade, picking up different nozzles for different effects, knowing to work fast on lettering so it doesn’t drip and keeping the can upright while maintaining the same distance from the wall. On Saturday, top aerosol artists selected from across the country will gather in Oakland for a Graffiti Battle, to anoint the nation’s top writer and bring attention to the art form. Canvases 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide will be set up throughout deFremery Park, and writers will have five hours to create a work, with judging set to begin at around 3:30 p.m.
This underground street art with distorted letters and bright colors – dismissed by many as vandalism – has been making a move toward the mainstream. Major museums, including the Smithsonian, have held graffiti art exhibits. “Graffiti has long been a dirty word,” said Estria Miyashiro, a San Francisco graffiti artist who runs the Graffiti Battle. “It has not lost its edge, but this sort of contest is one of the things going on to help people see it as a legitimate art form.” For the contest, Estria – he goes by his first name – has traveled to Harlem, Chicago and Hawaii to judge works of artists in each city. The judges look at lettering style, concept, composition, color and originality. In Harlem, there were 16 contestants. The winner, named Doves, did a “beautifully balanced piece with what we call classical style letters: the thickness of the letters was perfectly even,” Estria said.
Graffiti Battle:
What is billed as the nation’s first graffiti contest will be held 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at deFremery Park, 1651 Adeline St. in Oakland. It is a free family event and will feature 24 of the most talented graffiti artists in the country in a live painting battle. It is part of the Living Word Festival, a gathering of artists and educators, and founded by Youth Speaks. For information on the graffiti battle, go to www. estriabattle. com.

TYKE “ONE on ONE”
Tyke putting down what he is famous for, huge detailed burners. He has probably been doing these types of pieces before anyone on the West Coast. Give it up for this true pioneer. Nasa and Awr are the truest L.A crews around. Back in the 90’s they were diffently on top of their game, with letters structures embedded into characters and colors schemes jumping out of the wall.
Tyke is a California based artist born in Saigon, Vietnam during the peak of the War. After being raised in Toronto, Canada for 8 years, he was re-rooted once again to be planted in Southern California. As a product of the environment, The Witnes became familiar with subcultures such as skateboarding, graffiti and cryptozoology. During the mid to late 80s, The Witnes took notes on the art of graffiti written on the streets, freeways and various walls of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles. His older brother tagged Sumet and introduced him to key elements needed for a growing vandal. These ingredients were the book Subway Art, other local graffiti writers (Krush KSN, Eklips AWR and TCF members) and graffiti yards. Twenty years later, The Witnes is still absorbing these same elements. The Witnes is a member of the Los Angeles’s infamous AWR crew, as well as the NASA crew of Cerritos.
He currently resides in Orange County, and works as a freelance artist and also works on his own company/project called “Eye Witness”. The EyeWitness Brand produces collectibles and apparel. As a hobby, The Witnes partakes in sasquatch searching expeditions and other paranormal activity investigations.

Finished shots of a wall we attempted to do during the heatwave that went down here in LA. We tried showing up early enough to get shade and struggled through to finish with the sun beating down on us (it sucked). I brought a few sketches for this wall but ended up getting into a groove and freestyling. It’s good to see Witnes out doing his thing again!
